The Flying Instructor Rating
The course is designed for the applicant to be given adequate
training in ground and flying instructional techniques based
on established teaching methods.
On completion of the course and final test the applicants will
be issued with an FI(A) rating permitting the applicant to give
instruction appropriate to the issue of a PPL(A) and CPL(A)
Training Requirement:
The course includes 30 hours of flight instruction, 25 of which
is dual with an FIC instructor, 5 of which may be mutual with
a fellow student instructor. In addition there is 125 hours
of ground instruction. The ground training is broken up as follows:
Tuition from Instructor - 35 Hours
Practice by student - 83 Hours
Progress tests - 7 Hours
The student practice of 83 hours is made up of self study and
the giving to an instructor or students of flight briefings
and technical lectures. The Course Aim:
With the exception of the section on teaching and learning,
all the subject detail contained in the ground and flight
training syllabus is complimentary to the PPL(A) syllabus,
and should already be known by the applicant.
Therefore the aim of the course is to :
Refresh and bring up to date the technical knowledge of the
student instructor.
Train the student instructor to teach the ground subjects
and their exercises.
Ensure that the student instructors flying is of a sufficiently
high standard.
Teach the student instructor the principles of basic instruction
and to apply them at PPL level
Pre Entry Requirement
Before being permitted to begin an approved course of training
for an FI(A) rating, an applicant shall have:-
Completed at least 200 hours of flight time of which not
less than 100 hours shall be Pilot-In-Command (PIC) if holding
an ATPL(A) or CPL(A), or if holding a PPL(A), 150 hours as
PIC
Achieved a full pass in the CAA/JAR theoretical knowledge
examinations at CPL/ATPL level.
Completed at least 30 hours on single engine piston powered
aeroplanes of which at least 5 hours shall have been completed
during the 6 months preceding the pre entry flight test.
Received at least 10 hours instrument flight instruction of
which not more than 5 hours may be instrument ground time
in a flight simulator or FNPT II
Completed at least 20 hours of cross country flight as PIC,
Passed a specific pre entry flight test with an FI qualified
in accordance with JAR FCL for this purpose.
The pre entry flight test may be carried out at St. George
Flight Training prior to commencing the course
